Monterey desal project: State water board hears spirited debate over pumping rights
Spirited debate before state water board
By JIM JOHNSON Herald Staff Writer, 06/04/2013
Excerpt Highlights:
State water board members received an earful Tuesday of the
fierce debate over California American Water's potential right to pump from the
overdrafted Salinas Valley groundwater basin for the Monterey Peninsula
water project.
Earlier in Tuesday's hearing, a state water board staff member
told the crowd it might be up to two more years before the board would consider
potentially relaxing the deadline for the Carmel River
cutback order. The staffer said it was "way too early" to discuss the
matter because there's still no viable project capable of complying with the
order.
