7. W. Silva House
W/s Carmleo 4 N of Ocean Av.

Date Construction: 1924

Architectural Style: Craftsman

Builder: M. J. Murphy

Description: A U-shaped bungalow of board and batten wall cladding. The fence and gate reflect an oriental pattern.

Significance: California Register of Historical Resources criterion (2) is associated with the lives of persons important to local, California or national history. This house was the former home of internationally known artist William Posey Silva (1859-1948), who opened Carmel-by-the-Sea’s first art gallery, Carmelita Gallery in 1913. The Carmel Pine Cone referred to Mr. Silva as the “grand old man of brush and easel.” And the Silva family was part of a group who founded the first Christian Science Church of Carmel in 1917.

Note: William Posey Silva's Early California paintings are featured in many of Carmel-by-the-Sea's commercial art galleries today. He was a member of the Carmel Art Association and his works are held by the Harrison Memorial Library. Click on title link above for Edan Milton Hughes' artist biography of William Posey Silva.
