Is there a last minute hero to take on the establishment? Where are the movers and shakers of old Carmel? It's a sad commentary on the residents if the city gets the mayor's and the city council's brand of government by default. Alas, Carmel gets what it doesn't vote for.

The absence of challengers and challengers winning seats on the council means the council will continue its groupthink practices. As others have studied, the symptoms of groupthink are all present in this council. Illusions of invulnerability, rationalizing warnings that challenge assumptions, unquestioned belief in the group's rightness, stereotyping of individuals who oppose them as uninformed, misguided, etc., pressure on group members to conform, self consorship of ideas which deviate from the group consensus, illusions of unanimity among group members, preventing group members from hearing and discussing dissenting information. Groupthink involves a lack of critical thinking, analyzing and evaluating ideas. In my opinion, groupthink thrives in Carmel because there are too many Carmelites who want to avoid conflict at any and all costs, even to the detriment of Carmel and residents. The prescription for the death of groupthink is the election of non-aligned, independent council members, not mayor appointed council members like Talmage, Sharp and Rose.
If not now, when? Two years, 4 years? And Carmel-by-the-Sea subject to the worsening effects of groupthink decision-making and decisions on the health of our city.
