What should happen now to the vacant city council seat. What do you think?
The mayor and three city council members should appoint the third-place finisher in the recent election for city council. Tom Leverone campaigned and participated in the public candidates forums. He has demonstrated a commitment to Carmel based on his service on the Forest & Beach Commission. He is the most logical, objective and democratic choice. If the selection process is open to non-candidates, people who were not vetted in the election process and chose not to run, then charges of favoritism and ignoring the vote could undermine the credibility of the mayor and city council.
Jason Burnett, Ken Talmage and Victoria Beach showed respect for the peoples’ vote when it got them elected, therefore they should now show respect for the vote results and appoint the third-highest vote getter.
In short, appoint the third-highest vote-getter as soon as possible and the city council can get on with the City’s business with a full City Council
